What is Astrology?
Welcome to the fascinating world of astrology. Astrology is the relationship of the Sun, Moon and other
planets in the solar system and how the vibrational energies of these planets affect Earth and each individual
living on Earth. The birth chart, or natal chart, plot the energies that flow in to your magnetic field. At
the moment of birth, with your first breath, you took in to your body the vibrations manifested on that day and
time at that particular place where you were born. This basic pattern goes with you throughout life.
Astrology is not fortunetelling, nor is it a religion. It is a science and an art; a science
in that it utilizes calculated astrological data in setting up charts and an art in the ability of astrologers
to interpret the data and apply it to a given situation. Fortunetelling is the practice of revealing future
events and is fatalistic in forecasting. Astrology can forecast future trends and probabilities of events. Yet
man's free will can change predictions.
The birth chart is a blueprint of our character, potentials and tendencies with which we are
born. Our fate is determined by what we do with what we are given, for we always have free will in determining
how we will respond to a given set of circumstances. The natal chart reveals the conditions you are going to
meet in life. An understanding of your birth chart will allow you to take your life into your own hands and
intelligently utilize the planetary influences that will help you in gaining a broader insight into yourself.
How is it possible for distant planets to exert any influence on human lives and destinies? A
great body of evidence suggests that they do. Just as the Moon affects the tides of the ocean, the planets also
seem to exert an influence on human behavior. Studies of criminal and hospital records show that human behavior
is more erratic when the Moon is full, often bringing about heightened criminal activity. Mental hospitals,
police departments, and hospital emergency rooms assign more staff during the full Moon. Maternity wards are
often filled to capacity during the time of the full Moon. The Wall Street Journal printed an article on the
startling accuracy of certain predictions of stock market rises and declines based on the movements of the
planets. Numerous cases are on record of people who have been born very close together in time and place.
The similarities have been striking. These so-called astral twins, usually unknown to one another, married
on the same day, worked at the same type of job, had the same kind of health problems, met with similar
mishaps and died on the same day.
Many psychologists are using astrology in their practices as a counseling tool. It is currently
taught throughout many college campuses and has come out of hiding as a respectable art and science.
From presidents of our county to wall street investors to movie stars, astrology has served the
curiosity and needs of many people. It has been taken seriously by many great political leaders from Augusta
Caesar, to Winston Churchill to former president Ronald Reagan. Its popularity has grown as more and more
people are seeing how astrology can help people answer questions and gain insight into their lives and
the world around them.
A Brief History of Astrology
Astrology comes from the Greek work astro - star (heavens) and ology - study of (knowledge)
which means study of the stars. The Middle East (Tigris Euphrates valley ) is considered the cradle of astrology
and civilization. Astrology was in its advanced stage 5000 years ago, when the Sumerians applied it empirically
without instruments. The Sumerians were aware that certain fixed stars were circled by plantets invisible to the
naked eye. These planets were often attributed to mythology until the English astronomer William Hershchel
discovered Uranus in 1781.
Astrology flourished under the Roman Empire. Augustus had his own personal astrologer and his
successor Tiberius had his favorite. With the decline of the Roman empire, astrology suffered its greatest crises
because of Christianity. The Church felt it was a rival to its own authority. They objected to the idea that the
future could be predicted, contrary to the doctrine that men are responsible for their own actions and had a free
will. This presented a dilemna for the churchmen who believed in astrology. While astrology was officially tabooed
by the Church, prominent church men continued their study of the stars. Even the Popes had their coronations set
to the most advantageous time astrologically. Pope Paul III used an astrologer. During the reign of England's
King Henry I, the Archbishop of York died with an astrology book under his pillow, and the outraged populace
stoned his coffin. And today, despite its disapproval of the ancient science, the Vatican reportedly has the
most volumnious library of astrology books and literature in the world.
Hippocrates, the ancient Greek father of medicine, used astrology in his practice saying, "Only a fool would treat a patient with out first consulting his horoscope." While modern astronomers may scoff,
some of the greatest giants and geniuses of astronomy, Copernicus, Kepler, Galieo and Newton, were all practicing
astrologers and glorified in an art they considered to be the key to the universe. In the recent Oxford version
of the New Testament, the three wise men were astrologers, their quest touched by the heavenly conjunction which
traditionally fixed the time for the Messiah's birth. Adolph Hitler, Winston Churchill and more recently Ronald
Reagan had astrologers. Hitler did not listen to his astrologer and went ahead with the Russian invasion. This
was his downfall. Perhaps the history books may have been rewritten had he listened to his astrologer.
The Age of Aquarius has brought astrology out of the Dark Ages and it is receiving the respect and
recognition as the science and art that it is. Many counselors and psychiatrists are studying astrology to aid them
in better understanding their clients. It is a subject respectfully taught in many colleges and universities
today. Many would be shocked to know the number of public political figures, wall street stock brokers, movie
stars and even meterologists who hire astrologers as personal consultants. Astrology can be an invaluable tool
for helping many of us understand ourselves and our world.
